There are 5 agencies under the purview of the Ministry and involved in different activities related to livestock development in the country.
01. Department of Animal Production and Health 
The Department of Animal Production & Health is the apex government institution responsible for providing the leadership in the technical functions of animal health, animal breeding, livestock research and human resources development for livestock development activities.
It’s mission is to provide guidance and leadership for sustainable development in the livestock sector by recommending sustainable policies, formulating programmes and providing technical inputs for implementing programs to ensure production of food of animals origin in accepted quality and quantity required for domestic use and to meet the demand in export market.

02. National Livestock Development Board 
The National Livestock Development Board was established in 1973 under the State Agricultural Corporations Act No.11of 1972. The NLDB is presently managing 30 livestock & integrated farms, covering a total extent of around 14,000 ha, for maintaining livestock and coconut plantation with 01 training center.
Its mission is to run a self-sustaining chain of livestock and Crop Integrated Farms in different Agro-Ecological Zones with a satisfied workforce,
· To develop livestock activities within a reasonable time period to issue the requirement of breeding animals continuously to farms with the objective to making the country self sufficient in livestock and dairy products.
· To develop livestock and agricultural products with new Technology with the participation of the private sector to increase the output and profitability of the organization.
· To cultivate cash crops in selected farms to support the cash crop production programme in the country.
· To achieve optimum productivity levels in livestock and agricultural sector.
· To obtain maximum productivity from livestock and crop integrated farming systems and follow eco-friendly cultivation practices.

03. Milco (Pvt) Ltd. 
Established in 2000 as a government owned company, is the successor to the National Milk Board and is the major milk processor in the country. The company has a network of milk collecting centres spread throughout the country and 3 milk-processing factories, in Ambewela, Digana and Narahenpita.
It’s mission is to improve the standard of living of the local dairy farmer and increase milk production ensuring customer satisfaction by supplying quality fresh milk and dairy products at competitive prices, through effective and efficient management, encouraging human resources development in the organization, and achieve a sustainable growth in stakeholder benefits.

04. Sri Lanka-Libya Agricultural and Livestock (Co.) Ltd 
A joint partnership company established in 1981 with 51 % of the shares owned by the National Livestock Development Board and 49% by the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya to carry on agricultural and livestock projects in Sri Lanka and to import all necessary inputs and machinery for the same and export of all forms of agricultural produce and to purchase, sell, import, export of all forms of agricultural produce and to purchase, sell, import and otherwise deal in livestock projects including poultry, meat and eggs.
The company manages a 350-acre coconut farm at Bandirippuwa, Lunuwila integrated with cattle, sheep and poultry. The company also operates a poultry breeder stock and a hatchery.
